Letters to the Editor
Here Come 'da Judge - Reply Letter!
I support Kristen LaRue's letter in Sports Today for a pro-Aaron Judge move by the Giants to get him to San Francisco. And I know a way to achieve this laudatory goal! Instead of the $800 million he would probably want, he gets paid $200 million and receives a 1% ownership interest when the contract expires. Buster has a piece -- how about we add a Judge to the ownership group. We need him in the lineup -- tout de suite!
He has already acknowledged that San Francisco would be his first choice as a new-team destination. We would be happy to oblige. And Barry Bonds agrees: he wants Judge in a G-Men uniform:

Brandon Crawford -- Bravo!
Brandon Crawford is the best shortstop in the history of baseball.
We take the degree of difficulty of many of his plays for granted, or as routine, as he makes them look easy. Then, as in the series vs. Colorado, it was one phenomenal play after another. Here's a clip from Thursday's game. Le Meilleur, mes amis!
YouTube clip: "The Dive, Twist and Throw" vs. the Rockies https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ybwamc5ZUxM
Note to media vultures and buzzards circling the Giants roster as we near the end of the season. HANDS OFF BRANDON(S). Leave a continuity of greatness for the G-Men.
I know it's part of the job description to offer your thoughts and opinions, and probably not your favorite part either, but these are my thoughts, as a fan.

ADC Partners' Podcasts on Sports Today
Thank you for the podcasts from ADC Partners which you host, and which deal with topical sports issues. Last issue's speaker, Dan Rascher, had a lot of good points about N.I.L. and NCAA matters.
Link: https://conta.cc/3qOiSVp
Keep the hits comin'! I'd like to keep posted on N.I.L. developments, and also moves like USC and UCLA's jumps to the Big 10 (or 20?). I understand the California Board of Regents has UCLA's move under review -- but has no similar jurisdiction over USC.
Go Niners!

Thank You!
Thanks again for the weekly journal and Go 49ers! That was a great game. I am so glad that Jimmy could play but, of course, sad because of Lance’s tragic accident. Have a great week and stay safe and keep up the great work! “Carpe Diem!”

Same Goal, Different Event, Same Result: The 2022 Golf Presidents Cup
The U.S. Team has won the 14th Presidents Cup, defeating the International Team by a 17.5-12.5 margin at Quail Hollow Club. International Team Captain Trevor Immelman was a bit defensive in
the post-event interviews: "We're tired of being called 'Losers.'"
Trevor, nobody from the USA side ever called your team a bunch of losers. Au contraire, there was great respect for each contestant, and almost every match was close. If that type of self-analysis is what you have, then you may fulfill your own description, but it won't come from the Americans, it will be from your own bitterness.
The Americans were just better. Maybe if the Internationals had captains named Couples and Love, it might have helped their self-image. For now, Xander Schauffle, who won gold for the USA in the Olympics, and who iced the tournament, is a winner, as is the USA team.
As Ernie Banks famously said: "The only way to prove you're a good sport is to lose." You've accomplished that, Team Internationals.
Now, get ready for the next Presidents Cup, another opportunity to prove you are good sports.

San Francisco 49ers 10
Denver Broncos 11
September 25, 2022
| |
The San Francisco 49ers absorbed a brutal defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos and their perennial nemesis, Russell Wilson (#3), on Sunday evening in Denver, losing a grueling street fight by the improbable score of 11-10.
Garoppolo completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 211 yards and threw one touchdown pass and was intercepted once. He was sacked four times for 32 yards. Wilson pulled out another uncanny win for the 18th time in 22 head-to-head meetings.
Of concern is the ankle injury sustained by All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams in the third quarter. Williams left the game and
did not return.
The Niners' record now drops to a disappointing 1-2. Their next opponent are the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, 2-1, whom they meet on Monday Night Football at Levi Stadium
on October 3 at 5:15 p.m.

Making History
The Wrong Way
by Dave Newhouse
| |
There is a Mount Everest in baseball as well as a Dead Sea.
The Mount Everest, the game’s summit, is reflected individually in such league honors as Most Valuable Player, Cy Young Award, Rookie of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year. The Dead Sea, collectively, is baseball’s nadir, typified by bottom-feeding 100-defeat franchises.
The Oakland A’s are drowning in the Dead Sea.
For only the second time in A’s history out west, commencing in 1968, the A’s are flirting with a 100-defeat season, without deep sea flotation gear.
Other A’s teams have lost 90-plus games, but only the 1979 rendition hit the century mark, losing 108 times. No wonder, then, that those A’s attracted only 306,763 fans for the season, a franchise low in Oaktown.
Current A’s management, by ingesting truth serum, can’t deny that they are directly responsible for the current collapse. After an 86-76 record a year ago under the capable managing of Bob Melvin, the front office let power hitters Matt Olson and Matt Chapman slip away, then departed with pitchers Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. Melvin left on his own, but when the heart of your team leaves, there is no heart transplant.
You have to feel sorry for rookie manager Mark Kotsay, who was handed a deck of cards with no aces, leaving him “flushed" for talent. How was he expected to win when he doesn’t have one regular hitting .260? Thanks, Billy Beane.
The new-look A’s, in reality, look just like those 1979 A’s, flailing and missing at the plate, overworked and outmatched on the mound.
The difference between those two entities were the beloved Haas family, and the magical Billy Martin, who combined to convert the franchise from a loser into a winner, both on the diamond and at the turnstile -- one of baseball’s more historic reclamation projects.
Of course, with Martin, success was temporary, before it was time to bid him good-bye. But who’s going to rescue these Billy-clubbed A’s?
If you’re thinking team owner John Fisher, don’t compare him to the Haases, who endeavored to stay in Oakland, not Las Vegas or anywhere else. Don’t forget that Charles O. Finley had negotiated a deal to move the A’s to Denver before the Haases bought him out.
And the Haases didn’t have Oakland’s head in a hangman’s noose, like Fisher, who has provided the city with an untenable offer. He wants to build a ballpark at the Port of Oakland, which unlike the Oakland Coliseum site, won’t have BART, a railway, a freeway and two giant parking lots hugging an antiquated, but reachable, ballpark.
But if Fisher doesn’t get his wish in Oakland, it’s hello, Las Vegas, and 110-degree baseball heat. And Oakland would be dismantled as a sports city, from three franchises down to none. A truly Dead Sea.

A’s Ballpark Soap Opera Episode No. 45
By Amuary Pi-Gonzalez
| |
This is for sure. The Oakland A’s will finish the 2022 season at the Oakland Coliseum with the game on Wednesday, October 5, at 1 p.m. against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, But the next few months could bring us the final chapter of this long running soap regarding the proposed Howard Terminal ballpark in downtown Oakland, or a possible move out of town.
The City of Oakland and the Oakland A’s are negotiating a $12 billion waterfront park and surrounding area. They will have to figure out how to pay for the upgrades in infrastructure which includes affordable housing.
They are securing $320 million in public money for the A’s ballpark, but some expect $320 million will not be enough. The City of Oakland has applied for more than $180 million in federal grants and also looking for other regional, state and federal grants. The city doesn’t expect to be awarded the $180 million federal grants. It is all about money. What else is new?
At stake: A $1 billion privately financed ballpark of 35,000 seats (the A’s will pay for the park); $11 billion in development: 3,000 residential units, 1.5 million square feet of commercial space (retail and outdoor), 3,500 seat performance center, 400 hotel rooms and 18 acres of open spaces for the public to enjoy.
Do not tune out. Soon, more votes to come and by November the expected conclusion!

Mark McGwire -- From the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
In 1996 I had the good fortune to meet Oakland A’s first baseman Mark “Big Mac” McGwire. At the time he was endorsing Reebok watches and made an in-store appearance at San Francisco’s Macy’s.
I remember there was a short line to meet him in the store and when I finally got to his table, I shook his hand and he signed a photo and a baseball I had brought with me.
Because the line was so short, I got back in line and got a second autographed photo and my trading card autographed. On my third trip to his table he recognized me and just smiled and shook his head as he autographed a third photo and another trading card for me.
I left that day with three signed photos, a baseball and two trading cards and couldn’t be happier. Two years later in 1998, Mark broke the single season homerun record by hitting 70. Mark’s 70th homerun baseball would later sell for $3,000,000 to comic book artist
Todd McFarlane.

No more baseball Hall of Fame questions...
It's all NFL Hall of Fame questions from here on out!
In 1925, player/manager George Halas of the Chicago Bears persuaded a young halfback to join his team.
His nickname was "the Galloping Ghost."
Who was this player?
(For some reason, I actually knew the answer.
Perhaps because of my visit to the NFL Hall of Fame
in 1981?)

44,200 fans attend California Clasico
STANFORD, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy 3-2 on Saturday night in the California Clasico at Stanford Stadium. The Clasico was attended by 44,200 fans, sixth most of any MLS match during the 2022 season. The match featured the MLS debut of Miguel Trauco and the first MLS start for 17-year-old Homegrown Niko Tsakiris.
The LA Galaxy jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Javier Hernandez and Gaston Brugman in the 12th and 42nd minute, respectively. LA then added a third, also by Hernandez, in the 69th minute.
San Jose pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Cristian Espinoza successfully converted his penalty kick. The Quakes then scored a second goal in second-half stoppage time, but their comeback attempt was cut short when the final whistle came moments later.
The Earthquakes will next host Minnesota United FC for their last home match of the 2022 MLS season on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

Oakland Comes From Behind for a Point
In Colorado
Oakland Roots found themselves on the backfoot early when Elvis Amoh hit Oakland for their mistakes in the first minute of the game to give Colorado Springs Switchbacks the 1-0 lead. Oakland battled back into the game, but earned two early yellow cards inside of 15 minutes for the effort. Oakland built momentum with sustained possession with the best chance coming through a Lindo Mfeka strike that just went over the bar in the 40th minute. Oakland however, despite the fight, went into the half down by one through the early Colorado goal.
Oakland got the first chance of the second half from a free kick just on the edge of the box. Óttar Magnús Karlsson took the free kick which Elvis Amoh blocked with his hand earning his second yellow card and giving Roots the penalty kick in the process. Óttar Magnús Karlsson stepped up to score the penalty and level the match through his 17th goal of the year. Colorado Springs looked comfortable for the first spell after the sending off with the slightly better possession up until 20 minutes to go. Oakland mounted the pressure but could not find the goal to win the match as they settled for just a point.
Roots return to Laney for their home finale as they host Birgmingham Legion FC at Laney College on Saturday October 1st, 7:00 pm kickoff.

Bragging Rights Decided at the 2022 Rolex Big Boat Series
Photo by Daniel Forster / ROLEX
Hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club
Final exams are stern for a reason and the final day of racing at the 2022 Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California, delivered stiff—if not downright nautical—conditions. Crews arrived at dock call to seldom-seen southerly airs, big puffs and scattered rain. While this year’s Rolex Big Boat Series had plenty of breeze-on racing, the hounds howled a rare tune today, with uncommon Cityfront-created lees, big swells, squalls and gusts that registered in the low-30 knot range.
Fortunately for boat-battered bodies, squally conditions moderated as the day progressed.

San José State Enhances Sports
Performance Team
SAN JOSE, Calif. - In an effort to improve the student-athlete experience at San José State, Director of Athletics Jeff Konya announced the promotions of Shannon Mendez, Dr. Joe Puentes and Laura Alexander on Tuesday. Alexander advances to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Wellness and Leadership Development, while Mendez becomes full-time in strength and conditioning and serves as the department's registered dietitian, and Dr. Joe will provide additional sport specific psychologist services to all 22 intercollegiate sports at SJSU.
"Mental Health and Nutrition are two key areas that we need to continue to focus on here at San José State for our student-athletes," said Konya. "Laura has done a tremendous job leading this area for us and helping identify two quality professionals to provide additional services for our Spartans. We wanted to have the ability to provide these necessary services for our student-athletes so that their needs are met."
In addition to these services, SJSU student-athletes have counseling services from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) on campus, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

New Season, New Roles for Cross Country
MORAGA, Calif. – With the 2022 Cross Country season in full swing, both teams are in the midst of adjusting to new teammates as well as some coaching changes. Coach Marty Kinsey is now taking over the women's team and Coach Harlan Lopez is taking over the men's side.
Coach Marty Kinsey, who joined the Gaels in 2010, is looking forward to the opportunities it gives student athletes.
"The benefits of splitting the coaching responsibilities are many. The most significant is that instead of having one coach focus on 60 athletes, you now have two coaches individually focused on 30. It really helps with the student athlete experience and the student athlete getting more attention. In addition, having two head coaches allows for stronger recruiting efforts. Each coach can recruit how they see fit to build the program towards success."

Men's Basketball Releases Full 2022-23 Schedule
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's basketball program and head coach Chris Gerlufsen officially announced their full 2022-23 schedule on Friday afternoon.
Fresh off of their first NCAA Tournament in 24 years, the Dons are hungry to get back to the Big Dance after a successful season that saw the green and gold compile a 24-10 overall record, including a 10-6 mark in West Coast Conference play.
"We are excited to announce our schedule for the 2022-23 men's basketball season," said Gerlufsen. "Our non-conference slate should give us the opportunity to put our team in a great position prior to WCC play. The Dons will have several high-quality opponents early on, including games against Arizona State, Davidson and a fantastic Chase Center matchup with Utah State. We can't wait to build off of the momentum of our 2021-22 at-large NCAA Tournament bid. Our student-athletes look forward to playing in front of a packed Sobrato Center on November 7th. We have a talented, hungry group that will be exciting to watch. My staff and I are eager to have you back on the Hilltop to experience another special season of Dons basketball!"

WILL BE PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 4, 2022
For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.
With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
